How to Switch Between Microsoft Programs at the Same Time

Increased processor speed and memory in current computers enable users to use several programs at the same time. The Macintosh and Windows operating systems have task-switching functions that allow users to view running programs and access a specific application quickly by moving that window to the front. These task-switching functions are accessed by pressing two keys together.

Instructions

  1. Macintosh

    • 1

Press and hold the "Command" key (Apple logo) and press the "Tab" key.

    • 2

Review the pop-up display that shows the applications that are running. One program is highlighted in a box, designating that program is currently visible.

    • 3

Press the "Tab" key while continuing to hold the "Command" key to toggle through the open applications until the desired program is highlighted.

    • 4

Release the keys to access the selected application.

    Windows

    • 5

Press and hold the "Alt" key and press the "Tab" key.

    • 6

Review the pop-up list of open applications.

    • 7

Continue holding down the "Alt" key and press the "Tab" key to toggle through the list of programs until you reach the desired application.

    • 8

Release both keys to switch to the selected program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Task-switching in Windows Vista is called the "Windows Flip." It displays the program and a thumbnail image of the open applications and desktop.

  • If using Windows Vista, explore the Windows Flip 3D, an animated task-switching function accessed with the "Windows" and "Tab" keys (and using the same process as described above).

  • The Windows task-switching function is available on Macs running Windows in Boot Camp.
