How to Prune Annabelle Hydrangeas
Annabelle hydrangea is a modified mop head form of the perennial flowering shrub that produces white colored blooms in the summer and early fall. The large flower heads grow up to 8 inches in diameter and color shifts to green and reddish brown in the fall. They are hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 9 and should be pruned each year in the early spring before new growth appears. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Harvest fresh blooms at their peak for use in cut flower arrangements in the house or for use as gifts. Place cuts 10 to 12 inches down on the stems and remove any foliage that falls beneath the vase water line.
-
2
Remove fading blooms throughout the season down to just above a leaf node to encourage new blooms and bushy growth.
-
-
3
Hard prune the shrub every two to three years to reshape and resize the plant to mesh with its surroundings if need be. Remove congested interior branches to open the center of the shrub and encourage fresh regenerative growth.
