How to View Defragmentation in Vista
When Windows Vista was released, Microsoft drastically simplified the Disk Defragmenter tool from its XP counterpart, including removing the visual element that gave users a graphical overview of their hard drive's contents. If you want to see how defragmented a hard drive is on a Windows Vista system, the best way to re-create the old defragmentation view is with the help of a third-party application.
Instructions

1
Download and install the free defragmentation utility from Auslogics (see Resources).
-
2
Select the check box next to your C drive (or removable drive if you desire) and choose "Analyze" from the drop-down menu. The program will begin to analyze your hard drive, giving you a checkered view of your hard drive's contents, much like XP's defragmentation tool.

3
Select "Defrag" from the drop-down menu after the analysis completes to defragment your hard drive. The defragmentation process moves the files around on your hard drive so that they are in order and easier and quicker to access, allowing your computer to run a bit faster.

Tips & Warnings
Auslogics is not the only defragmentation tool for Vista replacing the old experience. See Resources for additional software; the basic analysis and defragmentation process is the same across applications.
