How to Use the Coaster Brake in a Huffy Bike

A new bike opens the door for new freedom but also new dangers. Knowing how to use the brake of your Huffy bike can help you avoid those dangers. Many riders don't appreciate the difference between braking on corners and braking on a straightaway; many don't use a longer braking distance on slick roads. But these are just the sorts of responsibilities that adults have to think about when they're driving a car. Learning how to use your coaster brake safely is, in a sense, good preparation for more grown-up responsibilities later in life.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the pedals backward with your feet to move the chain backward. This will cause the coaster brake to slow the rear wheel.

    • 2

Increase the force with which you push the pedals backward to increase the braking action.

    • 3

Brake sooner if riding in wet weather, but do not brake harder than usual. Instead, brake intermittently, to prevent skidding.

    • 4

Brake before corners, because braking while your Huffy bike is turning the corner can cause the wheel to slip. Always try to use the brake while going in a straight line.

Tips & Warnings

  • For your first ride on the Huffy, practice using the brake on a level area free of obstructions.

  • Have a bike store mechanic clean out the insides of the brake every two years--more often if you ride in dirt.

  • If your bike also comes with a caliper (hand-operated) brake, use the coaster brake as the main source of braking.

  • Have a bike store mechanic inspect the coaster brake as soon as you notice the brake is weakening.
