How to Access the Electoral Register

Citizens who are on the voter rolls decide district politics. The names list keeps local citizens current on which people elects official and approve legislative proposals. Political districts provide citizens open access to the rolls. Knowing the citizens committed to active civics in your district takes only the diligence needed to find the right record. You simply need to know who to ask.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the name and office for the elections official in your state, county, city or town responsible for the voter register. In each political district, a political official or group keeps the list: a registrar of voters, board of elections, clerk or other political group. Keep your knowledge current. Election officials change when a new governance team takes the political offices responsible for voter civics.

Visit CanIVote.org to find the state office that offers online access, if your state offers such access. Look up your record to find out whether you are on the roll. Use the pull-down list to select the webpage. A district like San Diego County allows you to enter your name, birth date and street number to access your record. Confirm you have an active enrollment.

    • 3

Request to view the voter list, if you need to look up other voters. You can make a request by choosing to visit the office, write by mail, call, fax or e-mail. In your request, tell the election official your name, citizenship and reason for the request. Describe the specific information on a citizen or group of citizens that you are seeking.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know exactly who you are looking for and the specific information you need before you contact the election official. Searching through long lists takes considerable time.

  • For a list viewing at the office, you might plan to spend some time reviewing the list to find the information you need. Voter registers grow quite long.

  • If you need copy of a record, ask the office for a copy. Briefly explain your interest in a copy. Examine the copy to ensure you have all the names and information you want. Not all records are complete. Keep the copy for your reference.
