Instructions

    • 1

Re-pot the bamboo plant. Bamboo plants are usually sold in temporary containers; therefore, you should choose a more permanent container to suit your personal taste and home decor. Make sure that the container is at least tall enough, however, to hold the bottom 1/3 of the plant's stems.

    • 2

Surround the bottom 1/3 (2 to 3 inches) of the bamboo plant with decorative stones or marbles. The stones or marbles will hold the bamboo in place.

    • 3

Fill the container with fresh water, just covering the stones or marbles.

    • 4

Change the water once a week. Hold the plant and stones in place while pouring out as much of the water as possible. Refill with fresh water.

    • 5

Add a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month. Follow the instructions on the bottle and then dilute the recommended amount to make it about 1/10 the strength. You do not want to burn your bamboo plant by over fertilizing it.

    • 6

Place your bamboo plant in indirect sun or filtered light. Too much direct sun can burn a bamboo plant, so place it 3 to 5 feet away from a sunny window or hang sheers in the window to filter the light.

Tips & Warnings

  • For really tall bamboo plants, choose a tall, clear glass container that will hold the plant upright and allow its greenery to show through the container.

  • If your bamboo plant's leaves are turning yellow, the water may contain too much salt or fluoride. Allow the water from your tap to sit for 24 hours before using it to change the water in the bamboo plant. You also can use filtered or spring water instead.

  • Never allow the water to become stagnant or cloudy.
