How to Decoupage on a Glass Block
Decoupage is a common craft technique that allows you to add decoration to nearly any object. A plain glass block transforms into a creative work of art with the decoupage technique. You can purchase the glass blocks at home improvement stores and at many craft stores. The resulting glass block craft works well as a display piece in the home or as a gift for family or friends.

1
Wash and dry the glass block to remove any dirt and residue. Wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to further clean it. This allows for a smooth finish and reduces bubbles or streaks.
-
2
Choose the images you wish to adhere to the glass block. Common options include high-quality copies of photographs, decorative scrapbook paper or pieces of fabric. Choosing a general color scheme helps narrow down the selection of decorative accents.

3
Cut the materials into pieces to fit the glass block. You can cut one large piece to cover the entire block or cut smaller pieces of different materials for a collage look. Lay out the pieces on the glass block to do a dry run of the design. Adjust the pieces until you find a design you like.

4
Apply a thin layer of decoupage medium to the back of each piece with a small paintbrush or sponge. Position it on the glass block and smooth it gently, especially if you are using paper. Brush another thin coat of the decoupage medium over the top of the images to seal them in place and serve as a protective layer. Let the block dry completely. Add more coats of the decoupage medium to create a stronger seal.

5
Add any three-dimensional embellishments to the glass block decoupage project. Ideas include tying a ribbon around the block, adding chipboard letters and shapes or decorating it with silk flowers.

Tips & Warnings
Decoupage medium comes in matte or gloss finishes. Decide how you want your finished glass block craft to look.
White glue that dries clear is another option in place of decoupage medium. Thin the glue with water for the best results.
