How to Make Musky Bucktail Lures

The muskellunge, or muskie, is the largest game fish in the pike family. They are prized by fishermen for their large size and strong fighting ability. Some fishermen enjoy muskie fishing so much that they limit their fishing entirely to this species. One way fishermen increase their enjoyment of the sport is to make their own lures. A very popular lure is the bucktail spinner. Any fisherman can make this lure with supplies obtained from the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the hook in the vice. Put the thread on the bobbin. Wrap the thread around the hook several times 1/8 inch from the eye of the hook. Allow the bobbin to sit free below the hook.

    • 2

Cut a piece of chartreuse bucktail containing approximately 30 strands of hair. Hold this bucktail on the hook near the wrapped thread. Wrap the thread around the bucktail several times until it is tight on the hook. Cut 30 strands of the red and black bucktail. Tie the red and black bucktail on the side and bottom of the hook. Tie a knot in the thread and cut the thread free. Glue the thread with fly-tying glue.

    • 3

Use the wire cutters to cut the fishing lure wire into an 8-inch length. At one end of this wire, use the rounded pliers to bend the wire into a U shape. Continue to bend the wire until it forms a loop. Wind excess wire around itself closing the loop. The loop is now called the eye of the hook.

    • 4

Hold the wire so the eye is facing the floor. Slide a bead onto the wire. Slide one end of the clevis onto the wire. Put a spinner blade onto the clevis and slide the other end of the clevis onto the wire. Slide another bead onto the wire, then slide the weighted body onto the wire.

    • 5

Slide the bucktail hook made in Step 1 onto the wire. Twist the wire around the hook several times securing it. Clip off any excess wire with the wire cutters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fish this lure slowly near weed beds.

  • Wear safety glasses while cutting wire.
