How to Engrave Limestone
Limestone is a soft sedimentary rock that has been used for thousands of years in architecture and masonry. A key component of cement and other mortars, limestone is known for being one of the most commonly used materials in architecture. The surface of limestone is easily shaped and carved to make for an excellent, long-lasting medium. The Great Pyramid at Giza and its surrounding complex of structures, like the Sphinx, were constructed thousands of years ago out of quarried limestone. The Egyptians also made elaborate statues, carvings and engravings of this highly utilized rock material.
Instructions

1
Place the limestone on a flat level surface. A workbench or an old table will work best. Cover the surface of the table to ensure that no scratching or abrasion will occur.
-
2
Place the tip of the chisel onto the limestone at a slight angle, and tap with the mallet until you reach your desired engraving depth. Chisel the limestone in any pattern that you desire or use a stencil or template.

-
3
Move the tip of the chisel, as you tap with the mallet, along the line patterns of your design. This will create fluid chiseled lines that you can detail later.
-
4
Detail the design by chiseling with different shaped chisel tips to make larger or smaller detailed grooves and lines. Keep a sketch of your design nearby or use the stencil to ensure quality results.
