How to Use Wire Ribbon on a Christmas Tree

Wired ribbon is one of the greatest decorating inventions ever. Perfectly sculpted garlands and bows are frozen in place throughout the entire holiday season, standing up to jostling party goers and curious children's fingers alike. Using wired ribbon as a Christmas tree garland is so easy, it ought to be illegal. The results will have even the wannabe Martha Stewarts in your neighborhood clapping their hands. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Buy enough garland to cover your entire tree. An average-width tree will need about nine feet of garland per foot of tree height, so a six foot tree will need 36 feet of garland. Buy a little more if your tree is especially wide.

    • 2

Beginning at the top of the tree, swag the garland after the lights are on and before the ornaments are hung. If needed, twist the garland around the branches so it won't slip off. Do not make the dips uniform; alternate them from level to level to create a more dynamic look.

    • 3

Hide the end of the ribbon by wrapping it around a branch or tucking it out of sight, then begin a new spool. Continue until you reach the bottom of the tree.

    • 4

Step back and analyze the tree from a distance to make sure the garland is not falling off anyplace and that it looks appealing. After the ribbon is rearranged to your liking, cut off the excess and tuck the end under a branch or hide it under an ornament.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using two or three different complementary ribbons together for your garland will create dramatic impact.

  • Leftover ribbon or ribbon in a complementary color can be used to create bows. See Resources for details.

  • You can create a vertical garland instead by attaching the ribbon to the tree top and letting it cascade down to the bottom of the tree. Repeat all around the tree.
