How to Hang Tab Curtains With Valances
Tab curtains are found in traditional home decors. They can create a comfortable and casual atmosphere for the room. The curtains are hung by the attached fabric tabs. This allows them to install easily on almost any rod. The addition of a valance can add dimension to the window treatment. The tab curtain and valance combination can be hung together with a small amount of planning. When hanging your tab curtains and valances, consider contrasting the fabric colors.

1
Measure the window's width and mark the center. Measure the curtain rods' length and mark the center.
-
2
Place the curtain rod center over the center of the window. The rod's vertical distance from the top of the window should be about 2 inches. Mount the first curtain rod bracket according to the package instructions.
-
-
3
Progress to the opposite end of the window. Hold the level horizontal with one end at the mounted bracket and the other end at the location for the second bracket. Read the level indicator to find the level position. This will ensure the brackets are hung at the same height. Mount the second rod bracket.
-
4
Measure the header size of your valance. The header is the fabric that is above the rod pocket. Measure the distance of the header measurement from the ceiling molding (the trim that covers the seam between the ceiling and the wall) toward the curtain rod. This is the maximum height the valance rod can be placed.
-
5
Mount the valance rod at a vertical position that is approximately 1 inch above the curtain rod but no higher than the maximum height measurement. The exact location is a personal preference. Mount the brackets in the same manner as the curtain rod brackets.
-
6
Insert the curtain on the curtain rod and place the rod in position. Hang the valance on the valance rod and hang in position. Notice the tab curtain length. If they hang closer to the floor than you like, consider hemming the bottom edge. Mark the desired finished length.
-
7
To hem, remove the curtains from the rod and spread them out flat with the wrong side up. Turn the curtain bottom edge up 1/2 the distance to the finished size. Turn once more, to the finished size. Pin in place. This is your double hem. Hand stitch the curtain panel to hem.

Tips & Warnings
Double curtain rods are available and can be suitable for some valance/tab curtain combinations.
Don't hang the curtain rod too below the top of the window. This will appear to choke the window.
