Homemade powdered sugar frosting is supremely yummy and easy to whip up in just a few minutes. It's also remarkably versatile. Things You'll Need

  • Sifter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cream of tartar
  • Large mixing bowl
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1/4-cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Electric mixer
  • Airtight container

Instructions

      Sift 3 cups powdered sugar and 1/4-cup cream of tartar into a large mixing bowl.

      Add 1 cup softened butter. Using an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar on high speed until well-combined.

      Add 1/4-cup heavy cream and 2 tsp. vanilla extract. Cream once again on high until mixture is smooth and fluffy (8 to 10 minutes). If mixture is too dry, add a bit more heavy cream; if it is too soft, add a bit more confectioner's sugar.

      Use frosting immediately. Store remaining frosting in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make chocolate frosting, add 2/3-cup cocoa powder and replace the vanilla extract with chocolate extract. The addition of the cocoa powder may require you to add a bit more heavy cream.

  • Replace the vanilla extract with other flavored extracts if desired. Suggestions: Strawberry, almond, lemon or orange.

  • Discard unused frosting if it develops mold or begins to crack or separate.
