How to Take Class Notes on a Computer

Taking class notes is a relatively simple task, assuming you're able to type a minimum of 40 words per minute. The days of writing pages of class notes into a spiral notebook may be numbered. Having your notes on your computer keeps you more organized, and should help you avoid legibility issues. For convenience, you may choose to type your class notes into word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Word Pad.

Ask permission from your teacher or professor to use your laptop in class. Some institutions may have a policy that prohibits students from using technology in the class. You may have to bargain with your professor in order to use your computer to take notes in class.

Avoid being confrontational, and assure the professor that your computer won't be a class distraction. Explain that taking notes on your computer makes you a better, more efficient student. Be prepared to show your notes, if necessary.

Determine what note-taking or word processing software you're going to use. You may be able to use note-taking software such as Notes PP or Microsoft OneNote. Most note-taking software allows you to easily format and customize your notes. If you choose word processing software, make sure you don't waste too much time formatting during the lecture. This could lead to missing a valuable piece of information given by your professor.

Power up your lap top prior to class. If possible, sit by a power outlet. This will ensure that your computer won't go dead during the middle of a lecture. Turn the brightness of your monitor down, as not to draw attention to yourself. Make sure you have the mute function turned on.

Avoid distractions such as instant messaging, email and Internet. It may be tempting to surf the net or play games, particularly if your professor's lecture tends to be on the dry side. Turn your wireless off during lecture. This will prevent the temptation to surf the web. Disconnect your external mouse. Chances are you won't need it for taking class notes on your computer.

Use the keyboard or a computer pen tablet. Keyboards allow you to type data, while you'll be able to draw and write notes with the help of a computer pen tablet. You may choose to stick with the keyboard method if you type faster than you write. For certain classes, such as engineering and science, you may find that the computer pen tablet provides you with greater note-taking flexibility.
