How to Use a Router As a Jointer

Using your router table as a edge jointer is a option if you have a tight tool budget or have a small shop with limited floor space for a regular jointer. The main drawback is that using your router table only works for edge jointing. It also takes a bit of time to change the router table over to a edge jointer. But with a little practice, you can edge joint lumber on the router for your projects needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety gear, including safety glasses and hearing protection
  • Router table
  • Straight trim bit with bearing
  • Shims
  • Straight edge

Instructions

    • 1

Start by putting on your safety gear.

    • 2

Unplug the router table and move the fence out of your way.

    • 3

Install a large trim bit with a end baring into the router.

    • 4

Move your router fence back into position. If you have a split router table fence, loosen the left side and add shims to move it out about 1/16-inch from the right fence. Tighten the fence and use a straight edge to align the left side of the fence with the bearing on the straight trim bit. You are now ready to edge joint using the router table.

If your fence is a one-piece model, take a thin strip of formica in the size of your router fence, and use double-sided tape to attach it to the left side of the router fence. Now align the left side of the fence to the bearing of the straight trim router bit using a straight edge. Now you are ready to edge joint with this router fence configuration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use in-feed and out-feed support for long boards to support them during the cut.

  • Lower the router bit so that only a 1/16-inch part is visible above the material you are jointing.
