How to Open WMF Graphics in Illustrator
WMF, or Windows metafile, is a file format used to support graphics, clip-art and line-art. WMF files are compatible with Adobe Illustrator, a graphic design program. There are three easy ways to open WMF files in Illustrator. You can open it as a new file, as a recent file if it was recently closed after being worked, or in Adobe Bridge if you use Adobe's media management system.

Launch Adobe Illustrator.

Click on "File" in the menu bar to pull down the File menu.

Select "Open." A file finder window will appear. Scroll though to locate your WMF file. Highlight the particular file by clicking on it.

Launch Adobe Illustrator.

Look for the desired WMF file in the Open Recent Items list in the Welcome window.

Scroll down to and select "Open Recent Files."

Choose the WMF file from the Open Recent Files list.

Click on "File" in the Illustrator toolbar to pull down the File menu.

Select "Browse in Bridge." Bridge will automatically open.

Scroll through the Folders and Content windows to find the file. Click on the file to highlight it.
