How to Pose People for Headshots

Headshots are used by models, actors, and other entertainers and are typically included with a resume when interviewing for a position. The art of taking a great headshot rests on proportion, balance, and details. When done well, a headshot highlights the good qualities of the subject, while camouflaging the negative aspects. To pose a person for a headshot, you will need to examine which features you wish to highlight and pose accordingly.

  1. Posing People for Headshots

    • 1

Determine which features of your subject are to be highlighted and which are to be concealed. Lighting and pose can do much to create a flattering headshot. Take note of what shape your subject's face is, how they carry their weight, and if there are any blemishes or marks requiring concealment.

    • 2

Seat or stand your subject on a 45-degree angle to the camera, turning his face back toward the camera. This allows the head to remain proportionate to the body and creates depth in the image. Headshots are meant to focus on the face of the subject, so do not include any props or distracting backgrounds. Placing the subject on a 90-degree angle to the camera will cause a disproportionate image, which is not flattering.

    • 3

Have your subject smile and make eye contact with the camera. The focal point of a headshot will be the subject's eyes and expression. A relaxed, open expression is preferable to a closed, guarded expression. If necessary, have the subject stretch or talk to release tension--photo shoots can be a nerve-racking experience.
