How to Remove Browser Hijackers Free

Browser hijackers are malicious software programs that affect how your web browser works. Normally, when you open your browser, you're taken directly to the home page of your choice. But if your computer is infected with a browser hijacker, your browser will open a different website--one that's chosen by the person who created the malware. Unfortunately, browser hijackers are built to be difficult to remove. If you don't have the tools, you won't be able to get them off your infected computer; the hijacker won't let you visit the sites you choose.

Turn off Windows System Restore. In Windows XP, this can be done by right-clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Properties". Click on the "System Restore" tab and place a check in the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "OK". In Vista, you will need to right-click on the "Computer" icon and choose "Properties". Next, click on the "System Protection" link. You will now see a screen with the different disks on your computer. Remove the check marks next to the drives and click on the "Turn System Restore Off" button.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. If the computer you are using is already infected, download this program using another computer and copy the .exe file to a flash drive or a CD. Using the copied file, install the software on the infected computer.

Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on the infected computer by clicking on the icon that is created on the desktop. In this instance, you will probably want to run a "Full System Scan" opposed to the "Quick Scan" option.

    • 4

Delete any malware found on the computer. Once Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has finished removing these infections, restart your computer. Once the computer has finished booting, try your browser to see if the infection has been removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are having trouble removing a browser hijacker, try starting your computer in Safe Mode and running Malwarebytes Anti Malware from there.

  • Having a browser hijacker on your computer could mean you have other malware infections as well. Run your spyware removal software and your anti-virus software as well to clean out any other infections on your computer.
