How to Upgrade Windows 95 to 98 With No CD ROM Drive

Windows 95 is remembered as one of the best operating systems of its time. It held on to that throne until the successor, Windows 98, came out with more features that greatly benefited people into networking and Internet browsing. Old Windows operating systems are still being used by people who want to stick with the basics or want to enjoy applications and old games that do not work in modern Windows versions like XP, Vista, and 7. Windows 98 boasts the advantage of keeping the same look and feel as Windows 95, as well as similar compatibility settings. A direct upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98 is possible even if you do not have a CD-ROM drive.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows 98 CD-ROM or copy of Windows 98 in a hard disk or removable disk
  • Windows 95 computer or laptop with LAN support
  • Spare computer or laptop with Windows 95/98 installed with CD-ROM drive (not required if a copy of Windows 98 is already in the spare computer's hard drive) and with LAN support

    • 2

Connect the LAN crossover cable to both computers.

    • 3

Right-click on the C: drive of the computer you wish to upgrade and select "Sharing." Select the "Shared As" option and set the "Access Type" to full.

    • 4

Open the "Network Neighborhood" found on the desktop or "Windows Explorer" and see if the other computer is connected. Expand the view by clicking on the plus sign (+) next to the "Entire Network" and connect to the only item there (should have a blue PC icon). Double-click that icon and check if there is a folder named "C."

Type the following commands in succession, pressing the Enter key after each one (separated in commas): C:, cd\, cd win 98, setup. Follow the instructions there to upgrade your copy to Windows 98.
