Instructions

1
Sketch off stocking shape onto paper. You can use an old stocking for a pattern, adding 1/2 inch seam allowance all around except for top. Add 5 inches to top of stocking shape. This will turn down for the cuff.
-
2
Assess the pattern shape. Do you like it? If so, cut out the stocking pattern. If not, tweak it until you are satisfied.
-
-
3
Fold main fabric wrong sides together. Pin pattern to fabric and cut. (Stockings are not symmetrical so make sure you have a front and back that meet toe to toe with right sides showing.)
-
4
Cover cording with coordinating fabric or use cording commercially covered . Stitch cording to edge of one stocking piece, starting 5 inches down from top and ending 5 inches down from top on opposite side.
-
5
Pin corded stocking piece to the uncorded piece, right sides together, aligning edges. Sew. Leave top free.
-
6
Turn stocking right side out. Press if necessary.
-
7
Follow step 3 for coordinating fabric. With right sides together, sew edges, leaving top free. Do not turn. This is the lining.
-
8
Make a 3/4 inch fold at top edge of each stocking toward the wrong side (main fabric and lining.) Press.
-
9
Push the lining down into the main stocking aligning toes, heels, sides and folded tops. (Wrong sides should be touching.)
-
10
Topstitch all around the folded edge 1/4 inch. Fold down 3 to 4 inches to form cuff.
-
11
Make a loop of grosgrain ribbon or covered cording and attach to inside of cuff for a hanger. Use upholstery or button thread and hand sew the loop to the stocking, reinforcing with several stitches for strength.

Tips & Warnings
Monograms on the cuff will personalize the stocking.
Do any embellishment to the body of the stocking before the lining and main fabric is sewn together.
You may eliminate Step 4 if you prefer not to use cording.
