How to Use Behavior Modification in Marriage

Behavior modification can be used in a marriage to change the way one or both members of the couple behave in certain situations. This is not a method to trick your partner into acting a certain way, but instead is most effective when both partners agree that there needs to be a change in behavior and are both dedicated to working on behavior modification together. Even when both people are in agreement, however, it can be a delicate process.

Instructions

    • 1

Set expectations. Clearly identify which behavior needs modification within the marriage and agree that the current behavior is not acceptable. For example, a husband who jokingly insults his wife on a regular basis can use behavior modification to stop the insults.

    • 2

Role-play the new expectations. The desired behavior should be practiced so there is no misunderstanding as to what is expected of both partners.

    • 3

Provide positive reinforcement when the ideal behavior is displayed. This might include compliments, physical affection, or rewards of fewer responsibilities around the house.

    • 4

Provide negative consequences when the undesirable behavior occurs. Examples of negative consequences include the withdrawal of physical affection or additional household responsibilities.

    • 5

Reinforce the behavior and be consistent. Behavior modification will not work very well if concrete consequences are not set and enforced. As the behavior changes, emphasize positive behavior but do not ignore regressions to the undesirable behavior.

Tips & Warnings

  • Behavior modification works best when both partners agree to the changes.
