How to Make a Star With Wingdings Font

Make a star using Wingdings font in Microsoft Word or other word processing programs by accessing the font character menu. Insert stars into documents in place of bullets, as decoration for announcements or invitations, or to embellish other text projects. Assign a shortcut key to insert the star symbol more quickly.

Instructions

      Open your word processing program and create a new document.

      From the menu bar located at the top of the word processing program, select "Insert".

      In Microsoft Word, select "Symbols". In OpenOffice, select "Special Character". The font character list will appear in a separate box on your screen.

      Within either the symbols box or special character box, select "Wingdings" from the pull down list of fonts to display all of the characters available within the font.

      Scroll through the font characters to locate the type of star you would like to place in your document.

      Double click on the image of the star within the font character list to insert it into your document.

      Close the symbols or special character box and return to your word processing document.

      Highlight the star in your document and change the point size in the font properties to adjust the size of the star. Adjust the position of the star by selecting the appropriate justification from the paragraph menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • After locating the star in the symbols box in Microsoft Word, assign a shortcut key to quickly insert the symbol in the future with the press of a button. With the symbol box open, select the option labeled "Shortcut Key". In the field marked "Press new shortcut key", select one of the function keys on your keyboard then click "Assign". Return to your open document and press the function key you assigned as the shortcut for the star symbol and it will automatically appear.
