In today’s modern world, changing your hair is as easy as changing your shoes. With the beauty industry booming and nearly 75 percent of all women coloring their hair in some form or another, many have turned to no license required shops in order to get professional products without the professional price. In this article you will get step by step instructions to maximize your results and get a professional look at home.

Gathering your supplies

You will need:

  1. A mixing bowl and brush
  2. Measuring beaker
  3. Gloves
  4. Hair clips
  5. 10 volume developer
  6. Hair color
  7. An old towel or drape
  8. Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly
  9. A comb

Once you have all of your supplies assembled begin by using your comb to section your hair into 4 sections and clip them off, then gently dab your Vaseline or petroleum jelly along your hairline to ensure the color does not bleed onto your skin. Once you have done this you are now ready to begin.

Measuring and Mixing

Once your gloves are on and your hair is prepped, grab your color of choice and puncture the lid of the color by using the cap. Depending on how thick your hair is and if you are simply doing an all over color or touch up will determine how much color you will use. Once you have the correct amount in your bowl you will then measure out the equal amount of developer into your measurement beaker, so for example if you use 2 ounces of color you will use 2 ounces of developer. After you have measured out your color and developer use your brush and begin to mix the two together in your bowl until there are no lumps. You are ready to apply!

Make sure to apply Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly evenly along your hairline and the tops of your ears to ensure that the color does not bleed onto the skin. If you find that you do get some on your skin, gently massage the area with warm soap and water to remove the color.

Application

Begin by applying color to the roots of each separated section as well as your hairline. Once you have done this remove the clip from section 1 and use the handle of your brush to gently pick up a small section of hair, once you have done that take your brush and begin applying color from root to tip. Once you have done the top gently flip your hair over and apply to the bottom as well to ensure the color is evenly distributed. Continue this process until each section is evenly coated in your hair color. Set a timer for 20 minutes and once your timer dings shampoo and condition your hair thoroughly.
