How to Convert a QuickTime Video for Free

Apple is quite particular about the video formats that can be played through its suite of video-capable applications and devices. Rather than get frustrated over the lack of compatibility of a video file, simply convert the file to optimize it for the device of your choosing. If you use a free, open-source conversion utility, converting any video file is a breeze.

Select "Source" in top left of the application window. A file selection dialog will open. Navigate to the file you'd like to convert, and select "OK."

    • 3

Select "Toggle Presets" in the top right of the application window. There are a handful of pre-configured video settings. If you are attempting to convert a video into a QuickTime compatible file, you can select "Regular > Normal." If you are attempting to convert a QuickTime file into another format, such as iPod or iPhone-compatible, select "Apple > Universal."

    • 4

Select a place to save your file under "Destination."

    • 5

Adjust the quality settings according to your preferences under "Output Settings." If you have accompanying subtitle files, you can add them under the "Subtitles" tab.

    • 6

Select "Start" in the top left of the application window to begin the conversion process. Depending on the size of the original file and the quality settings of the resulting video, the process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours. Once completed, right-click the resulting file and select "Open With QuickTime."
