Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your window with the measuring tape. Measure the distance you want the cornice board to stand out from the wall. Keep the distance from the wall 5 inches or less. Decide how far down your window you want the cornice to hang, and take that measurement as well.

    • 2

Mark with a pencil on the plywood where to make your cuts. Draw out a design along the bottom edge of the cornice board that fits into the décor of your room. Decide from different ideas such as scallops, points or straight edges.

    • 3

Use the jigsaw to cut out the front and the two side pieces of the cornice from the plywood.

    • 4

Attach the front of the cornice to the sides. Stand the side pieces on their sides and hammer the nails through the front of the cornice.

    • 5

Use your scissors to cut two layers of batting to completely cover the cornice board. Cut one layer of fabric to completely cover the cornice plus 3 inches all the way around to give you excess fabric to pull to the back of the board.

    • 6

Lay the fabric face down on a large work surface. Center the batting on top of the fabric. Center the cornice, flat side down, on top of the batting.

    • 7

Pull the fabric to the back side of the cornice. Staple the fabric with the staple gun to hold it in place. Pull the fabric to the back of the cornice tightly all the way around. Cut into the corners 1 inch to help the fabric lay smoothly at the corners of the cornice.

    • 8

Flip the cornice over. Use the hot glue gun to apply the trim around the bottom and top edges of the cornice board. Make sure to put 2 inches of the trim behind the board and hold it in place with a staple to make it secure.

    • 9

Use the screwdriver to attach the picture hangers at each of the upper corners to complete the cornice board.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use foam board to make your cornices instead of heavy plywood. Cut it out with a utility knife or even a serrated kitchen knife. Just make sure the edges are perfectly smooth before adding your batting and fabric for best results.

  • Decorate your cornice board using paint instead of fabric. This works especially well in children's rooms. Paint a decoration that matches the décor of their room. Spray the completed cornice with a clear coat to protect the paint.
