How to Make a Sewing Kit Out of a Canning Jar
If you're looking for a quick gift to give to someone who sews, put together a sewing kit in a jar. The jar kit is handy because it not only holds sewing supplies but also serves as a pincushion. Fill a canning jar, sometimes called a Mason jar, with sewing essentials such as needles, a seam ripper and a small scissors for a beginning sewer, assorted colors of thread for someone who sews often, or skeins of embroidery floss for someone who does needlework.
Things You'll Need
- Wide-mouth canning jar with lid and screw band
- Scrap of lightweight fabric
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Hot glue and glue gun
- Toothpick
- Polyester fiberfill
- Sewing notions, including straight pins
- 20-inch length of 1/4-inch ribbon
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a 4-inch-diameter circle of fabric.
-
2
Lay the screw band upside down on your working surface. Place a 1-inch-long, thin bead of hot glue around the top inside edge of the screw band, where the top and side of the band meet.
-
-
3
Place the fabric circle, with the wrong side facing up toward you, inside the band. Use a toothpick to press the edge of the fabric onto the glue. Working in small sections, continue to glue the edge of the fabric circle around the top inside edge of the band. Because the fabric circle is slightly larger than the screw band, the fabric will not be taut.
-
4
Put a ball of fiberfill--about the size of a small tangerine--onto the fabric.
-
5
Run a line of glue around the outer edge of the lid that has printing on it. Quickly flip the lid over and press it firmly inside the screw band, so the fiberfill is between the fabric circle and the lid.
-
6
Tie the ribbon around the bottom edge of the jar's threads.
-
7
Fill the jar with desired sewing accessories.
-
8
Screw the cap onto the jar until the bottom of the cap meets the ribbon.
-
9
Stick pins into the stuffed, pincushion top of the jar.
