How to Add Program Icons to the Taskbar in Windows XP

The icons on your Windows Taskbar to the right of the "Start" menu represent the Quick Launch programs, which are basically the same as shortcuts on your desktop, but you do not have to close all of the windows to get there. The system tray area at the right end of the Taskbar where the clock is located shows icons of the programs that are currently running on your computer and that start on reboot. To add a program icon to the Taskbar, you will have to add the program shortcut to the Startup folder so that it shows up in the system tray and simply create a new shortcut so that it shows up in the Quick Launch area.

Instructions

  1. Quick Launch

    • 1

Right-click anywhere in a blank space on your Taskbar.

    • 2

Click on "Toolbars" and then on "Quick Launch." (Do not do anything If this option already has a check mark next to it.)

    • 3

Click on the program icon you want to add to the Taskbar from either the desktop or the "All Programs" menu at "Start," and then drag it to the right of the "Start" button.

    System Tray

    • 4

Go to the "Start" menu, and click on "My Computer."

    • 5

Double-click the C drive and then "Documents and Settings," and open the folder with your user name.

    • 6

Go to the "Start" menu, "Programs" and then "Startup."

    • 7

Click on the program icon on your desktop that you want to add to the Startup menu, and drag it to the Startup folder. You can also open the "All Programs" menu from "Start" and do the same with any program on the list.

    • 8

Close the Startup folder, and reboot your computer. The program you have added will start on reboot, and its icon will appear in the system tray.

Tips & Warnings

  • In the "System Tray" section, in Windows Vista and 7, go to "Start" and then "All Programs," right-click on "Startup" and select "Open"; then proceed to Step 4.
