How to Set Up a Penn Baitcast Reel
Penn makes four types of baitcast reels that anglers use to target both fresh and saltwater fish. Baitcast reels are especially useful for trolling and casting, especially when anglers are targeting heavier fish like bass, northern pike and muskies. Baitcast reels can handle heavier line, and more of it, than other reels, and are a favorite of many anglers because they allow for pinpoint casting accuracy.

1
Attach the Penn baitcast reel to a baitcast rod, which makes it easier to string line on the reel. Baitcast rods can be identified by the trigger-shaped piece that hangs underneath the reel seat.
-
2
Spool line onto the Penn reel. To do so, thread the end of the line through the tip of the fishing rod, then through each of the rod guides. Place the fishing line through the line guide at the front of the reel.

3
Wrap the line twice around the spool and then tie a knot so the line is tight against the spool.
-
4
Spin the handle of the Penn reel to wind line onto the spool. Continue spinning the handle until the line is about 1/8 inch below the rim of the spool.
-
5
Cut the fishing line with a scissors about 1 foot beyond the end of the tip of the fishing rod.
