How to Make Rum, Bay Leaf and Clove Aftershave
Rum, bay leaf and clove aftershave is a simple, homemade product that is just as effective as expensive commercial products, which often contain unnecessary fillers and potentially harmful additives and preservatives. Making your own aftershave also will save you quite a bit of money compared with buying aftershaves in retail stores. This recipe makes enough aftershave for about two months of daily use, though it easily can be doubled or tripled. Things You'll Need
- 1 cup bay leaves
- 1/2 cup ground cloves
- 1/2 cup ground allspice
- 1/4 cup fresh ginger root, peeled and chopped
- Large glass jar with tight-fitting lid
- 4 cups dark rum
- 1 tbsp. vitamin E cream
- Sterilized glass bottle with pump or fine-spray mister

Place the bay leaves, cloves, allspice and ginger root in the jar.

Pour the dark rum over the herbs, and seal the jar. Let steep for two weeks in a cool, dark place.

Strain out the herbs with a fine sieve, retaining the liquid in a separate jar or saucepan. Discard the used herbs, and add the vitamin E cream. Shake vigorously to combine.

Transfer some of the aftershave to a sterilized glass bottle with a pump or fine-spray mister. Store the portion remaining in the large glass jar in a cool, dark place until needed.

Tips & Warnings
Shake the mixture gently before each use, as the herbs tend to separate and sink to the bottom.
Avoid storing or mixing any type of homemade cosmetics or skin-care products in aluminum containers, as there is serious concern about heavy metals entering the bloodstream through the pores.
