How to Make a Printable Word Scramble
Word scrambles are great to keep children interested, while teaching them the alphabet and vocabulary, and they work to keep the adult mind sharp. If you need to produce word scramble puzzles for your class or for your friends, there is a much easier way than pulling out a pencil and paper. You can use an Excel spreadsheet software to easily create the puzzle, and print as many copies as you wish with the click of your mouse.

1
Open Microsoft Excel. A new worksheet will open and place the cursor in cell A:1. Type in a title for your page of puzzles.
-
2
Move the cursor down a couple of rows and type in the scrambled word, one letter in each cell across the row. For example, the word "CAT" might have the letter "T" in cell A:3, the letter "C" in cell B:3, and the letter "A" in cell C:3.

3
Return to the first cell of the scrambled word. Use your mouse and left-click and drag in order to select all the cells containing the letters that comprise the word, as well as the cells in the row directly beneath them to highlight them.
-
4
Click on the line drawing icon in the Excel toolbar. Select "All Borders," and Excel will draw lines around each cell that contains a letter, and around the blank cells directly beneath it. This will provide a place for the puzzle worker to write in their answers.
-
5
Repeat Steps 2 to 4 for each word you wish to scramble.
-
6
Click on the "File" command, or the Office button if you are using Excel 2007. Select "Print," make any changes you would like to the printing options, and select the number of copies you would like to print. Click "Print" and you have successfully made and printed your own word scramble puzzle. Alternatively, you can just press "CTRL" and "P" at the same time on your keyboard to get to the Print Dialog box immediately.
