How to Quilt a Snowman
Making a quilted snowman is a fun craft for the winter season. Snowman décor can be used from early December through February. Quilting the snowman will provide texture and interest to the item. The quilting will also help the snowman hold up in the washing machine. Quilted snowmen can have functional uses, such as in the kitchen for potholders. They can also have purely decorative uses, such as hanging on the door as a greeter. Making a quilted snowman is a simple task that will take about two hours to finish.

1
Determine the size you want the snowman to be. A potholder is typically around 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide. A greeter usually measures about 24 inches tall and 12 inches wide.
-
2
Draw a large circle, with the compass, that equals about half of the height and is as wide as the width. For example, a potholder snowman will have a bottom circle with about a 4 inch diameter. A greeter's bottom circle will be have a 12 inch diameter, approximately.

-
3
Draw a medium circle for the middle that is one inch smaller than the large circle, about a 3 inch diameter for pot holders or an 11 inch diameter for greeters.
-
4
Draw a small circle for the head. At this point you should draw a size that looks appropriate according to your own preferences. The head may have a 2 inch diameter for the potholder or about a 6 inch diameter for the greeter.
-
5
Cut all the pattern pieces out. Trace each of the circles onto the right side of the white fabric twice and cut out each circle. Cut one set of circles from the batting.

6
Make a fabric sandwich with each of the circles. Place a circle on bottom with the right side down. Put batting on top and put a fabric piece on top with the right side up. Pin the layers together.
-
7
Machine stitch in a grid or free hand pattern across each sandwich. Machine satin stitch around the edges of the circles.
-
8
Assemble the snowman by overlapping the circles about 1/2 inch. Place the large circle on bottom, overlap the middle circle on top. Then overlap the top circle on top of the middle one. Stitch in place.
-
9
Draw eyes, nose, mouth and buttons on the snowman. Stitch with embroidery floss.

Tips & Warnings
Attach a large loop of string for a hanger on the back of the greeter snowman. This can be used to hang the snowman on a clothes hanger for storage.
If your snowman is a potholder consider doubling the batting thickness.
