How to Rub on Suntan Oil

Suntan oil provides the lustrous skin glaze that accents muscle definition and enhances tanning, while protecting and moisturizing sunbathers. Most suntan products include a sunscreen rated with a sun protection factor (SPF) number. Skin that has already tanned under the sun needs less protection than skin that is exposed at the beach for the first time of the season. Get the right moisturizing protection from the suntan oil of your choice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Rubbing on Suntan Oil

    • 1

Read all ingredients on suntan oil labels before selecting a product. Do not use a product containing ingredients that will aggravate a known allergy.

    • 2

Choose the right sun protection factor. Buy oil with a sunscreen agent rated above SPF 15 if your skin has not tanned somewhat already. Only use SPF factors between 6 and 8 after tanning well under previous exposure. SPF 30 or above is necessary for times of exposure when no tanning is desired.

    • 3

Apply the product early. Suntan oil should be applied at least 30 minutes before solar exposure, and some suntan ingredients need an entire hour to absorb into the skin. Read the label on your product for instructions on how much absorption time to allow.

    • 4

Apply in recommended amounts. Most suntan oil label instructions give application amounts in terms of ounces. Measure that against the amount the container holds. If instructed to apply two ounces of a six-ounce bottle, that means to use one-third of the bottle for each application.

    • 5

Apply suntan oil by squirting directly onto the skin and rubbing a hand over the area to spread into an even layer. Pour oil on the back of your hands to rub on the upper back between the shoulder blades. Avoid getting oil into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

    • 6

Reapply suntan products as often as necessary. Perspiring, swimming and time in the sun all factor into how long the sunscreen protection lasts. Read the instructions to find out how soon to reapply after sunbathing, swimming or active play.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not apply suntan oils to infants and young children.

  • Limit times of solar exposure to avoid burning. Better to gradually tan over the summer than suddenly burn in one afternoon.

  • See a doctor or dermatologist if you develop skin rashes, bumps, welts or localized irritations after using suntan products.
