How to Burn a Disc on Media Player

Windows Media Player is a component of the Windows operating system that allows users to view video and images and listen to audio files on their computers. Media Player can also help you organize your digital media library, and create and burn unique CDs of your favorite songs. This article will explain how to create a playlist and burn an audio CD in Windows Media Player 11, the version of Media Player that is compatible with both Windows XP and Vista.

Instructions

  1. Create a Playlist

    • 1

Create a playlist of the music you would like to burn to a CD. A playlist is a list of songs that you can save and play in Media Player. Keep in mind that a CD can typically hold approximately 80 minutes of music when creating your playlist. Open Media Player, click the "Library" menu tab and select "Create Playlist". A new playlist pane will open on the right side of the screen.

    • 2

Enter a name for your playlist in the box with Untitled Playlist highlighted. You can also click on the "Untitled Playlist" button and select "Rename Playlist" to name the playlist at any time.

    • 3

Add songs to your playlist by clicking and dragging them from your library to the playlist pane. You can arrange the songs in any order and delete them by right clicking on a title with your mouse and selecting "Remove from List."

    • 4

When you have completed your playlist, click on the playlist name at the top of the pane and choose "Save Playlist As." The Save As dialog box will open. Type a name for your playlist in the File Name box and click "Save." Your playlist will now appear under the Playlists heading in the left pane of your Media Player.

    Burn a CD

    • 5

Insert your blank CD-R or CD-RW disc into the appropriate drive. Click the "Burn" tab in Media Player and select "Audio CD."

    • 6

Add your playlist to the burn list by clicking the playlist name in the left pane of Media Player and dragging it to the burn list pane on the far right. You can also click and drag individual songs from your library or from other locations on your computer. To remove a song, right click on the song title and select "Remove from List." Media Player will detect the length of the songs you have selected, and the bar in the burn list pane will show you how much space is left on the disc.

    • 7

When you have selected and arranged all the songs and playlists you want to burn, click "Start Burn" and the status bar will track your progress. It will take Media Player several minutes to burn everything. If your computer is older, refrain from using Media Player while it is burning your disc.

    • 8

Label your disc when the burn process is complete. Use a CD/DVD marker to label your disc. Ink from regular markers may degrade the protective coating on your disc over time, resulting in errors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a CD-R disc for maximum compatibility with home, car, and portable CD players.

  • It is not necessary to create a playlist in order to burn a CD in Media Player. If you do not want to create a playlist, skip to Section Two of this article.
