How to Turn On Windows Internet Security Settings

Internet security helps computer users avoid viruses and identity theft. Security settings on computers with Windows operating systems can be adjusted to block threatening web content, identify potential threats, and offer the user options to block or allow suspicious content. Accessing and activating the security settings in Windows XP is similar to setting Internet security in other Windows systems.

      Click "Start," then "Control Panel" from the list of menu options. Double-click the "Security Center" icon.

      Turn on any security essentials features that show a red "Off" status. Click the "Firewall,"or "Automatic Updates" icon for a dialog box with options to click the "On" selection for either of these features. Open the anti-virus program installed on the computer to activate or update virus protection as needed. Click the "Internet Options" icon to adjust other security settings.

      Click the "Security" tab on the Internet properties box. Click the "Internet" choice from the security zones field to highlight it and access the settings. The box will display a vertical slide bar. The slide bar has security settings for default levels at medium, medium-high or high. Click the "Default level" button and drag the vertical slide to the desired security level setting to activate predetermined settings for all individual security features. Click the "OK" button to turn on the preselected Internet security settings.

      Click the "Custom Level" button to set each security feature individually. This opens a box featuring a scrolled list of internet applications with click options to enable, disable, or reveal a prompt for each. Click in the circles next to the desired options for each individual application. Click the "OK" button.

      Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the Internet properties box after making all setting selections for Internet security. Click the "OK" button.
