How to Attach Wood to Cinder Blocks

Cinder block is notoriously hard to attach anything to because of the difficulty you will have drilling into it and how easily things can fall out of it. The cinder block in the holes tends to break away, which makes the holes larger, causing whatever is in them to fall out. You can, however, attach material such as wood to cinder block as long as you use the correct anchoring system. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Drill with a concrete bit
  • Wire brush
  • Can of compressed air
  • Epoxy mixture
  • Epoxy bolt with nut
  • Piece of wood
  • Nut

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you will be anchoring your piece of wood on the cinder block. Make a mark at this location with a permanent marker to give you a indication of where to drill.

    • 2

Drill into the cinder block far enough to satisfy the required drilling depth for the epoxy bolt, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Brush out the hole you drilled with a wire brush to get all of the debris out. Use the brush in circular motions to ensure the hole is cleared.

    • 4

Blow air into the hole you drilled with the air compressor. This will remove any excess dust from drilling.

    • 5

Mix the epoxy according to the manufacturer's directions. The epoxy often comes with an applicator, which will make the job easier.

    • 6

Fill the hole one-third to halfway full with the prepared epoxy. Start at the bottom of the hole, and work your way forward.

    • 7

Place the epoxy bolt into the hole, and begin to twist it clockwise. Twisting the bolt coats it with epoxy, which allows it to bond with the cinder block.

    • 8

Spin the anchor bolt until it reaches the surface of the cinder block. This bolt should be turned as tight as you can to get a good lock on the block. Make sure there is no epoxy between the nut and the cinder block.

    • 9

Drill a hole through the wood. Place the wood onto the anchor, using the hole you just drilled. Tighten a nut around the bolt so it holds the wood in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a circular wire brush to clean out debris. This will make that step much easier to accomplish.

  • Don't fill the hole too much with the epoxy. The epoxy will expand as it dries, and it can get in between the nut and the wall.
