How to Pair a Compaq Computer & Bluetooth

One of the useful things you can do with a Compaq PC is to set up a Bluetooth connection between the PC and a Bluetooth-capable device. Using Bluetooth devices allows for things such as sharing the data connection of a cell phone for the Internet, or to transfer files between the PC and a Personal Digital Assistant. To get these features, you will need to pair the Compaq PC to the device.

Things You'll Need

  • Bluetooth-compatible device
  • Bluetooth adapter

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter for your Compaq PC. If your Compaq PC already has a Bluetooth adapter built in, skip to Step 4.

    • 2

Install the drivers for the Bluetooth Adapter using the installation disc that comes with the adapter. Follow the program's instructions to install the drivers.

    • 3

Connect the Bluetooth USB device to your computer via a USB port. Wait for the computer to recognize and install the driver.

    • 4

Open up My Bluetooth Places by going to Start > Programs > My Bluetooth Places.

    • 5

Click on the "Bluetooth Setup Wizard." This will begin your configuration for the Bluetooth device you want to use with the Compaq PC.

    • 6

Set the device you will want to connect to the PC to be in the "Discoverable mode." As each device is different, you will need to refer to the owner's manual for the exact procedure.

    • 7

Select the device from the list of nearby Bluetooth devices on the PC. Your PC will then either generate a four-digit code or allow you to select a code.

    • 8

Choose the services you want for the device. If you are unsure what you can get, select "Let the computer decide."

    • 9

Enter the code given onto the Bluetooth device when prompted to do so.

    • 10

Make the connection a "Trusted Device." This way you will not need to set up a connection again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you intend to keep your Bluetooth adapter in your PC on a long-term basis, consider placing it in a USB slot on the back of your PC.
