How to Launder Wool Socks
Wool socks are available in two styles; Superwash washable wool and regular wool yarn. Both styles offer heat retention, moisture wicking and are incredibly warm. The difference is that Superwash wool is a yarn type that is certified by the The Wool Bureau as being machine wash and dry capable without the fear of felting or shrinking the wool. If you do not know the type of yarn used to make the socks, wash them as if they need to be hand washed and dried. Does this Spark an idea?

Machine Washing
-
1
Set the washing machine to the gentle cycle with cold water. Set the machine to a short cycle if the option is available. The short cycle is one less rinse and spin cycle.
-
2
Fill the machine with water and add a mild detergent. Let the machine agitate for a minute to dissolve and mix the soap into the water.
-
-
3
Place the socks and other washable wool items into the tub, pushing them down into the water. Let the items soak for 10 minutes then continue with the wash cycle.
-
4
Remove the items when washing is complete. Place Superwash wool socks in the dryer on the low cycle or lay flat to air dry.
Hand Washing
-
5
Fill a tub with cold water. Add a mild detergent, mixing well to dissolve into the water.
-
6
Place the socks in the soapy water, making sure they are fully submerged. Squeeze the socks while in the water to gently wash the fiber. Do not twist or aggressively wring the socks as this will cause the fibers to lock and felt together.
-
7
Let the socks soak for five minutes. Rinse the socks gently with cold water. Repeat the rinse cycle, making sure all soap is removed. Do not rub or twist the socks.
-
8
Lay the socks on a clean, dry towel and gently roll the towel over the socks to remove excess water.
-
9
Air dry the socks by laying them on a flat surface out of direct sunlight. Gently reshape the socks while they are wet if their form changed while washing. Wet wool is easy to stretch and shape.

Tips & Warnings
Do not use a detergent that contains bleach as it will stiffen the fibers or dissolve the wool fibers when used in large quantities.
