How to File North Carolina Taxes Online
Filing your North Carolina taxes online, also known as "e-filing" has become the most popular way for North Carolina taxpayers to pay their taxes. The North Carolina Department of Revenue estimates that 2/3 of the income tax returns filed in the state in 2009 were filed electronically. Professional tax preparers can do this task for you. However, if you would like to do it yourself, the instructions below will walk you through the process.

Select the "e-file" option when you have completed your return. Some software packages may require a fee to file electronically and some may not. The Department of Revenue in North Carolina does not charge anything to e-file. If the software has a charge, pay the fee and continue following the instructions for e-filing in North Carolina. If you are expecting a refund, you may request a direct deposit or paper check at this stage.

4
Mail a paper copy to the North Carolina Department of Revenue of Form NC-478, Form NC-478 series A through L, and Form NC K-1, if you were required to file either of them. No other forms need to be mailed in. Your tax filing software will allow you to print the forms already filled out.
