How to Convert Digital Photos to Line Art
Convert your digital photos to line art using Adobe Photoshop. Photos converted to line art give an artistic touch to your image that resembles a sketched drawing. Use photos converted to line art as graphics for websites, advertising materials, in scrapbooks or as artwork in your home.

Open your digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and access the "Layers" pallet by going to Window>Layers or pressing the F7 key on your keyboard.

In the layers pallet, right click on the thumbnail of the image labeled "Background" and select "Duplicate Layer." In the Duplicate Layers dialogue box name the duplicate layer "Background copy" and select "OK." There should now be two identical layers visible in your layers pallet.

Select the "Background copy" layer from the layers pallet. From the menu bar at the top of the screen select Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. The image on the screen will turn to a black-and-white version of your original digital photo.

Following the process outlined in step 2, make a duplicate copy of the "Background copy" layer and name the layer "Background copy 2."

In the layers pallet, select the "Background copy 2" layer and go to Image>Adjustment>Invert.

Right click on the "Background copy 2" layer and select "Blending Options." From the "Blend Mode" pull-down menu, select "Color Dodge" and select "OK." The image on your screen will go blank during this step.

With the "Background copy 2" layer still selected, go to Filter>Other>Minimum and adjust the slider until the image preview reaches the desired line art effect.

Tips & Warnings
To create a colored variation to your line-art image, turn off the visibility of the "Background copy" layer in the layers pallet by clicking on the "eye" icon to the left of the image thumbnail.
Free web photo services, such as www.picnik.com, allow you to upload your own digital photographs and create a line-art pencil sketch from the image. Once you have uploaded your photo to picnik.com, select the "Create" tab from the top menu bar then select "Effects." Scroll through the list of effects to find the pencil sketch and click to apply the effect to your photo. Click on the "Save and Share" tab to download your completed line art photo.
