How to Convert a Monitor to a CCTV

CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras are typically viewed with expensive monitors that accept BNC (British Naval Connector) inputs. These are the standard connection for CCTV cameras. However, if you would like to view your cameras with a standard CRT (cathode ray tube) computer monitor or a flat screen computer monitor, there is a way you can do this inexpensively. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. For Monitors with an RCA Video Input

    • 1

Plug your camera output into the BNC barrel and the barrel into the BNC to RCA adapter.

    • 2

Plug the RCA end of the adapter into the RCA video input of your monitor (this input is usually colored yellow). The RCA to BNC adapter does not have to convert the signal; it simply adapts the connector type. RCA to BNC adapters cost less than $5 online.

    • 3

Set your monitor for the appropriate AUX (auxiliary) input. You may have to use your remote control or go into your monitor menu function to select this input. You should now be able to see your CCTV camera on the monitor. If you have a TV which has an RCA video input, you can view your CCTV cameras using an RCA to BNC adapter as well. You can also use the RCA to BNC adapter to record a single camera with a VCR or a DVD recorder as long as it has an RCA video input.

Plug your monitor cable into the CCTV to VGA converter. The CCTV to VGA converter is a device which converts the 1 volt peak-to-peak camera signal to a signal your monitor can use. This device is more expensive than the RCA to BNC adapter, typically around $50 if purchased on the Internet.

    • 5

Plug your camera into the CCTV to VGA converter.

    • 6

Turn on the converter and follow the converter set-up instructions. RCA to BNC adapters are powered devices so you will need a spare outlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a DVR (digital video recorder) as part of your CCTV system, you can view the output from that unit using an RCA to BNC adapter or a CCTV to VGA converter.
