How to Copy iPod Information Onto Mac Using Freeware
ITunes is software that can be used as both a media player and as a syncing program to transfer files and information from the Mac to the iPod. With iPod versions 2007 or later, protected files purchased through the iTunes store can be copied from the iPod onto the Mac using iTunes as well. To copy non-protected files or to copy files from an older iPod, however, you must download a third-party software.

Download iTunes. iTunes is available to download on the Apple website.

Install iTunes onto your Mac computer. Once the program is completely downloaded, the program icon will appear in a pop-up on the screen. Open the "Finder" and click on "Applications" to open the "Applications" folder. Drag the program icon into the "Applications" folder.

Connect your iPod to the Mac using the cable that came with the iPod. Open iTunes and click on the iPod in the left-hand "Device" pane. The files stored on the iPod will populate in the main window.

Navigate to the "File" menu and choose "Transfer Purchases From iPod." Any video or audio files that were purchased directly through the iTunes store will be copied from your iPod onto your computer.
CopyToy or Copy Trans Suite

Download CopyToy or Copy Trans Suite. This software allows syncing from the iPod back to the computer. The standard, consumer versions of both programs are available for free.

Install CopyToy or Copy Trans Suite on your computer. Double-click the application icon and follow the installation screens to install the program.

Connect your iPod to the computer. Open CopyToy or Copy Trans Suite and the iPod's files will populate.

Click on the songs that you would like to move from your iPod onto your computer and click "Export." A save window will come up, in which you can select a folder where you would like the transferred files to be copied on your computer.

Check "Smart backup" in "Copy Trans Suite" and click "Start backup." The program will detect the differences between the programs and automatically sync the items to include all files.
