How to Restore XP Desktop Settings
Windows XP allows a great deal of flexibility in customizing the appearance of your desktop, including changing the icons representing common desktop components. After changing your desktop icons, you may find that you prefer the Windows defaults and would rather change them back. Restore the settings of your Windows XP desktop to regain the default icons for your desktop items.

Right-click in an open area of the desktop, and click "Properties."

Click the "Desktop" tab, then click the "Customize Desktop" button.

Click an icon in the window, then click the "Restore Default" button. Repeat this process for each desktop icon until your default XP desktop settings are fully restored.

Click "OK" twice to close each window.
