How to Get a Double Master's Degree

Earning a master's degree is beneficial for many people. It provides the opportunity to advance in a career field while earning a higher salary. While most people receive a single graduate degree in a specific field, some students become experts in multiple fields, achieving a double master's degree.

Choose two majors by finding two subject areas of interest. Seek out majors that complement each other or make you more versatile to employers. For example, getting a double master's degree in business and a foreign language increases your job opportunities because you'll not only have a business background, but will also be able to speak a second language.

Apply for admission to both programs. Complete the graduate school application and department applications for specific master degree programs. Include any reference letters needed with the application, and, if required, perform well on an interview with the faculty of the program.

    • 3

Get funding. Know that getting a double master's degree takes twice the amount of money as a traditional graduate degree. To help pay for tuition, seek out a graduate job teaching, researching or advising undergraduate students. Be sure to apply for scholarships from the school as well as private foundations. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify for student loans.

Make a plan of study. Meet with faculty to devise a plan of study for earning your two degrees. Determine if you'll take classes for both degrees at the same time or concentrate mainly on one. Look for classes that are offered sparingly, such as once every two years, and plan to enroll when offered. Understand that it will take twice as long to complete your double master's degree.
