How to Hook up a Canon Printer to a Dell Laptop

Often, connecting a printer to a Dell laptop is an easy task--Windows (especially the newer versions) is usually good at finding and automatically installing new printers. Installing your new printer can thus be as easy as plugging it in--however, if this tactic doesn't work, you can resort to a manual install of the necessary drivers from the Canon website.

Instructions

  1. Plug and Play

    • 1

Turn on the Dell laptop. Make sure you are connected to the internet.

    • 2

Plug the printer's USB cable into the laptop.

    • 3

Allow Windows to search for the driver online. Often, depending on your version of Windows, the printer drivers will be automatically found and installed without you having to do a thing. If this is not the case, continue to the next section.

    Download Canon Printer Drivers

    • 4

Go to the Canon Download Library link in the Resources section.

    • 5

Under "Product Menu," select the "Printer" category, and then select the "Product" and "Model" corresponding to your printer. When you are finished, click "Go."

    • 6

Download the printer driver by clicking the link under "Additional Downloads." This will be the link to the file ending in ".exe"

    • 7

Double click the downloaded ".exe" file and follow the on-screen instructions to install and use your new printer. Because each model of Canon printer has different drivers, the installation instructions will vary.
