How to Make a Bread Basket Warmer

Make your own bread basket warmer from the base of an old or new terracotta pot. Most bread basket warmers are just flat terracotta disks that have been glazed or printed on. The shape of the planter base fits well in the base of a bread basket, and its curved lip radiates warmth to the bread from both the bottom and sides. Bring a bread basket to the table that stays warm for the entire meal with your homemade warmer inside. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the terracotta plant pot base in hot soapy water and allow it to dry for at least 12 hours. When it is completely dry, the surface will be light colored and appear dusty.

    • 2

Dip the corner of a paper towel into vegetable oil and apply the oil generously to the pot base's surface.

    • 3

Place the oiled plant pot base into a cold oven and turn the temperature setting to 350 degrees.

    • 4

Shut off the oven after it has been at 350 degrees for 20 minutes and leave the terracotta base in overnight to cool.

    • 5

Remove the pot base from the oven and apply another coating of oil to seal the porous material.

    • 6

Put the oiled terracotta base back into the cold oven. Set the oven temperature for 350 degrees and repeat Step 4. After cooling overnight, your bread warmer will be ready to use.

    • 7

Heat your homemade bread warmer in the oven along with fresh baked breads for at least 20 minutes.

    • 8

Remove the bread warmer from the oven and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel.

    • 9

Place the wrapped warmer at the base of the bread basket and stack the baked goods on top.

    • 10

Cover the baked goods with a second clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and moist for up to an hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using plant pot bases made in China, as they may contain lead or other harmful substances.
