Decide what the bonus room will be used for. If it is going to be a game room, choose a bright, fun color. Find a warm color for a guest or relaxation room, and neutral colors for an office space.

Take inventory of what you have or will have in the bonus room. The paint should be the last thing you choose, since it comes in such a wide variety of colors and can be mixed to matched anything. Take note of the colors of the flooring, curtains, furniture and any artwork.

Match the color with nearby rooms. For example, if the hallway outside of the bonus room is cream with brown trim, you might paint the bonus room brown with cream trim, or another color that matches the cream and brown hallway. Remember that when the door to the bonus room is open, you will be able to see the colors of the two rooms together.

Consider the details of the room. Trim, moldings or even the ceiling can be painted a different color than the wall, or you can paint an accent wall a different color.

Get a color fan from a local paint store. This fan will have all of the colors made by that particular manufacturer. Hold the colors up to the walls and furniture that you are trying to match. Buy small samples of your favorites and test them on your wall. Give yourself a couple of days to think about it, peeking in on the color during different times throughout the day.
