How to Install Scooter Tires

There are many advantages to having a motor scooter rather than a car. Motor scooter users enjoy increased accessibility, economy of size and cost, and the open-air experience of driving their scooters. However, like their larger automotive counterparts, scooters require general and routine maintenance and repair work. One such repair is changing a flat or worn tire. With the proper tools and a replacement tire, you can easily install a scooter tire on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the wheel nut wrench to unscrew and remove the wheel nuts. Pull the wheel straight off the wheel bolts.

    • 2

Release any air in the tire by using the valve stem tool to depress the plug stem inside the tire valve.

    • 3

Press down on the inside edge of the tire to separate it from the rim. Work your way around the entire rim.

    • 4

Slip the end of a tire iron underneath the exposed edge of tire that is closest to the tire valve. Slip the end of another tire iron underneath the exposed edge of the tire, a few inches from the first tire iron. Pry up that section of the tire to pull the tire edge up and over the rim. Move the second tire iron around the entire rim and continue to pry off the tire until that whole side of the tire is up and over the rim.

    • 5

Reach into the tire and pull out the tube.

    • 6

Insert one tire iron between the rim and the tire, from the back of the tire all the way through to the front. Carefully pry up the end of the tire iron that is sticking out of the back of the tire in order to begin to pull the entire tire off of the rim. Insert the second tire iron under the tire, next to the first so they are both now in an upright position and work them around the entire rim to gradually pry the rest of the tire off of the rim.

    • 7

Set the new tire over the rim and use a tire iron to pry the backside of the tire onto the rim. Leave the edge of the front of the tire sticking up and over the rim for inserting the tube.

    • 8

Feed in the new tube by tucking it under the front tire edge that is sticking out. Start by sticking the valve through the valve hole in the rim, then use your hands or the tire irons to work around the rim, gradually tucking in the entire tube.

    • 9

Use your tire irons and your hands to pry and push the front edge of the tire onto the rim. Be careful not to pinch or puncture the tube. Pry over the area adjacent to the valve stem last.

    • 10

Inflate your new tire and set it back on the wheel bolts. Reattach and tighten the wheel bolts.
