Instructions

    • 1

Build a fire in a fire pit the will disallow the fire to spread outside of a safe area. Feed the fire well and allow a nice, deep (three to four inches) coal bed to form.

    • 2

Mix the bread recipe of your choice according to the directions included with the recipe. Allow the bread to rise in baking pans while the coal bed is forming.

    • 3

Line one Dutch oven with aluminum foil for each pan of bread that you desire to bake. Place one bread pan into each prepared Dutch oven. Place the lids over the bread pans to close the Dutch oven(s).

    • 4

Place each Dutch oven into the hot coal bed. Use a shovel to add hot coals from the fire to the top of each Dutch oven. Even heat is required on the top and bottom of each Dutch oven. You may need to remove some of the coals from underneath the Dutch ovens to decrease the heat to a more ideal level. Otherwise the bread may burn on the bottoms of the bread pans.

    • 5

Bake for the recommended time according to the recipe Remove the lids of the Dutch ovens to check the progress of each loaf. When the loaves are finished baking, remove the Dutch ovens from the hot coals and remove the bread pans from the Dutch ovens. Allow the bread loaves to cool on a wire rack.
