How to Use Your Cell Phone as a Modem With a Desktop to Connect to the Internet

If you don't have an Internet connection, but you do have a cell phone, you can use it to connect to the Internet. You'll need to install a wireless network adapter on your desktop computer in order to connect to the cell phone using a Bluetooth connection. And you'll need to make sure your phone supports a Bluetooth connection before you can use it as a modem to connect your desktop computer to the Internet.

  1. Set Up a Bluetooth Device

      Access the Bluetooth option in your cell phone; turn it on. You will need to make the phone "discoverable" by selecting a "Show" button or something similar. Refer to your cell phone's user manual to learn how to make your phone discoverable via Bluetooth.

      Turn the Bluetooth option on for your computer. Click "Start." Select "Control Panel." When the Control Panel opens, click "Bluetooth Devices" to display the "Add Bluetooth Device Wizard."

      Select the option for "My device is set up and ready to be found." Click "Next."

      Wait for your computer to display a list of available devices. Select the new device that was found and click "Next."

      Select the option for "Let me choose my own passkey." Enter what you want to use for your passkey. Click "Next."

      Click "yes" when you see the "Add to My Devices" option. Enter the passkey you have chosen. Click "OK." Wait while your computer is installing the Bluetooth device.

    Set Up a Bluetooth Connection

      Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." When the Control Panel opens, double-click "Network Connections." Select "Create a new connection" on the left when the Network Connections window appears.

      Click "Next" when the New Connection Wizard appears. Select "Connect to the Internet," then click "Next." On the next screen, select "Set up my connection manually." Click "Next." Select "Connect using a dial-up modem" on the next screen. Click "Next."

      Select Modem and then Bluetooth DUN Modem from the Device selection screen. Click "Next." Enter the ISP name or your wireless carrier and the phone number to dial. When that's done, select "Anyone" for Connection Availability; click "Next."

      Type the username and password for your wireless carrier; click "Next." Finish creating a connection by selecting "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop." Click "Finish" close the New Connection Wizard.

Tips & Warnings

  • The phone number to use for the Bluetooth connection on your computer for AT&T and T-Mobile is *99#; Verizon and Sprint is #777.

  • Entering information incorrectly in the Network Connection Wizard will prevent your computer from connecting to the Bluetooth.
