How to Decorate the Tops of Kitchen Cupboards
It is the small touches in decorating that can make a big difference in the overall look of a room in your home. In the kitchen, everything has its spot. Dishes are in the cabinets, silverware in the drawers, and food in the pantry. One place in the kitchen that can use some decoration is the top of the kitchen cabinets. When there is space between the cabinet and the ceiling, this could be a perfect spot to place decorative items. It also helps to draw the eye up, which will make the ceiling appear higher. Measure the amount of space you have and decide how much you would like to put above the cabinets. Notice the height as well; you do not want things piled up to the ceiling. You also need to be careful about cluttering up the space. One item or group of items every couple of feet is a good guide.

Gather up extra items that you have in the kitchen but that do not currently have a space of their own, such as cookbooks. Stand them up with the binding facing out, and be creative with book ends, such as a mason jar filled with colorful pasta. If you have a number of small items that you would like to store, get a decorative box with a lid and store it above the cabinet; that way you have stored your items without creating clutter.

Use live flowers and plants to give the room a fresh look. Remember that they need to be cared for; since the space may be hard to get to, choose a type that does not need daily watering or attention.

4
Look for kitchen antiques, such as tins or canisters, ceramics and baskets. All of these items would be lovely displayed on the kitchen cabinets. Group decorative olive oil bottles or other glass bottles and jars together, with various colors and sizes, to make a nice collection.

Add above cabinet lighting to add light and dimension to the room. This works best if there is crown molding that will hide the lights themselves.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that the space above the kitchen cabinets can collect dust easily. Do not neglect that space once you have finished decorating. A quick pass once a week with a dust brush should do the trick.
