If you have this problem, more often than not it indicates a hardware failure and must be sent in for system repairs. Thankfully, Microsoft has recognized this problem and has extended its system warranty to three years to cover this issue. Ensure that it is a hardware failure. If the power supply light is red, orange or unlit, try plugging it into a different outlet. If it is still red, orange, or unlit, then the problem is with the power supply, not the hardware.

Contact Microsoft. If the power supply is green and you are still experience the three red rings, then the problem is a hardware failure. To start a repair order, log in to your Windows ID account on the Xbox website; go to Console Management, and click repair console.

Register your new console if If you have not done so already. Input your console's serial number and your current address.

Click Request Repair and, on the form, select the problem type ("Console is displaying 3 Flashing Red Light") and briefly describe the problem. Confirm your shipping address and select shipping method. If your console is under warranty, then the repair should be free. Otherwise, a fee of $99.99 will be charged.

Submit this form and Microsoft will send you a shipping box. Follow the included instructions to pack your Xbox and send it away. Your console will be returned, cured of the three red lights.

If you are unsure if the problem is with the hardware or the power supply and have access to a friends power supply, try plugging in a different power supply to see if the problem persists. If your Xbox works, then the power supply is faulty.
